A lesson on communication from kicking bags

Recently, I attended a Muay Thai class that left me with more than just sore abs. The instructor's approach to teaching made me reflect deeply on my own methods as a digital marketing trainer. The language he used was not encouraging, and it had a noticeable impact on my experience. This negative encounter served as a crucial reminder of the power of words and their influence on learners.

The Impact of Language

From the moment the class began, the Muay Thai instructor's language was an interesting blend of sarcasm and showing on control. Instead of constructive feedback, I was met with "gems" like, "Is that your lunch coming out" and "Shaun, if you cant do a push up properly, you shouldn't wear a team t-shirt" These comments, while perhaps intended to be humorous, quickly chipped away at my confidence and enthusiasm. The energy in the room shifted from fun excercise session to a collective dread. While yes I am there to excercise, kick bag and not compete, I want a fun encouraging environment each week. Not one that I feel I am being stress to perform or critised to do better.

Reflecting on My Own Teaching Methods

As a digital marketing trainer, I constantly strive to inspire and motivate my students. This Muay Thai class forced me to introspect: am I always as positive and encouraging as I think I am? Do my words uplift or undermine my students? It was a sobering realization that the impact of my language could either bolster a student's confidence or erode it. This experience underscored the necessity of being mindful of my communication style. Positive reinforcement, constructive criticism, and a supportive attitude are essential in fostering an environment where students feel valued and capable.

The Importance of Positive Reinforcement

Positive reinforcement is a cornerstone of effective teaching. It helps build a learner's confidence and encourages them to keep trying, even when they face challenges. Reflecting on the Muay Thai instructor's approach, I am reminded that every student is at a different point in their learning journey. Encouragement and patience are critical. By focusing on what students do well and gently guiding them through areas of improvement, I can create a more nurturing and productive learning environment. My goal is to ensure that my students leave my classes feeling empowered and motivated to apply their new skills.

Moving Forward with Mindful Communication

Moving forward, I am committed to being even more mindful of my language as a digital marketing trainer. I aim to practice empathy and positivity, ensuring that my feedback is always constructive and encouraging. By doing so, I can help my students develop both their skills and their confidence. This experience has been a valuable reminder that the words we use have a profound impact on those we teach. Just as the Muay Thai instructor's language had a detrimental effect, my positive and careful communication can inspire and uplift, leading to a more effective and enjoyable learning experience for everyone involved.

Learning from how I learn

In conclusion, the Muay Thai class was an eye-opening experience. It highlighted the importance of positive language and its powerful role in teaching and learning. As I continue my journey as a digital marketing trainer, I am committed to fostering a supportive and encouraging environment, ensuring that my students feel empowered to achieve their full potential.
